“Alcatraz Island offers a close-up look at the site of the first lighthouse and US built fort on the West Coast, the infamous federal penitentiary long off-limits to the public, and the history making 18 month occupation by Indians of All Tribes. Rich in history, there is also a natural side to the Rock—gardens, tide pools, bird colonies, and bay views beyond compare.” – Alcatraz Island National Park
Alcatraz sits out in the middle of the San Francisco bay. I really didn’t think to much about touring an old prison but much to my surprise the tour was really worth the visit. You actually get to go into some of the cells and see where famous people like Al Capone and Machine Gun Kelly stayed while in Alcatraz. Also learn about the several escape attempts. I was fortunate enough to see Robert Luke there who was an actual inmate while Alcatraz was open.
I would always pass by this group of books in the History section at the library called “Who’s Who In America”. Since one of my hobbies is genealogy, I searched through the books looking for relatives. Unfortunately none were to be found. That was when I came up with the brilliant idea that “I”, Barry Hughes was going to be in the Marquis Book of Who’s Who In America without spending any money. It took me several months of faxes, letters and scans but in February 2011 I received this letter. Goal accomplished!!
